One of Scotland's largest transport infrastructure programmes, which aims to upgrade 80 miles of single carriageway between Perth and Inverness, continues to cause concern amongst local residents and businesses.

Albeit the ambitious programme to dual the A9 will bring many benefits for road users, communities and businesses, it will also cause major disruption and future problems for those who are in the path of the road widening scheme. Land and property owners have been warned to brace themselves for compulsory purchases.

The Compulsory Purchase Order process is made up of a number of stages and can take up to 18 months. However anyone with an estate or interest in land that is acquired compulsorily has a right to claim compensation. The compensation will vary depending on the value of the land as well as the projected loss caused by losing possession of the land, amongst other criteria.

It is important that you know your rights if you are likely to be affected by this multi-billion pound project. Properties subject to a CPO can technically claim payments of up to 90% of the agreed loss as soon as the acquiring authority takes ownership.
