House moves in Scotland remain on the ‘allowed’ list

29 September 2020 Property & Estate Agency Sharon Connolly

As the government increases measures to tackle the coronavirus infection rate, the Scottish Government has updated its guidance on home moves accordingly. It has been a challenging time this year for those looking to move house, however the latest announcement clarifies that all home moves will continue to be permitted, provided they can be carried out safely.

As with many things in our lives, we are all adapting to the new normal. The process of finding and moving into a new home is slightly different from before COVID-19 with much of the process being done online, and of course advice on physical distancing, hand washing and respiratory hygiene must be followed in order to ensure that the risk of spread of COVID-19 is reduced as far as possible.

However the Government has confirmed that members of the public are allowed to leave their homes in order to move home and undertake activities in connection with the purchase, sale, letting or rental of a residential property including:

  • visiting estate or letting agents, developer sales offices or show homes,
  • viewing a residential property to look for a property to buy or rent,
  • preparing a residential property to move in,
  • moving home, and
  • visiting a residential property to undertake any activities required for the rental or sale of that property.

If you are moving house, please remember to be as flexible as possible and be prepared to delay moves if necessary, for example, if someone becomes ill with coronavirus during the moving process or has to self-isolate.

With demand elevated, house prices in the UK are currently at a record high and homes are selling fast. It remains an uncertain time for many people with government restrictions in place prohibiting social visits to other households and changing the way that we interact with family and friends, however for now the property market is strong, and all home moves are permitted, provided they can be carried out safely.
