Divorcing through this pandemic

23 April 2020 Family Law Stuart Hunter

Whether it is a baby boom or an increase in divorce, the current pandemic will certainly see a shift in behaviour patterns and family structures when things come to pass.

For some, the prospect of being quarantined with their partner will be a welcome opportunity to spend time together, and many people are even predicting a baby boom at Christmas! Whereas for others, it may force couples to spend more time together causing tensions in their relationship to rise to the surface. China’s divorce spike is a warning to the rest of the locked-down world as the coronavirus outbreak is very likely to lead to an increase in marriage break-ups because couples are being kept in self-isolation together.

More worryingly we are beginning to see a rise in domestic abuse incidents, given the very stressful circumstances for many families.

During these difficult times, many people might find that their circumstances require them to raise legal action.

Knowing your options and making sure you are informed and fully prepared to take action if needs be is vital. Family lawyers are able to advise on options, make a plan of action, and also conduct meetings with both parties through video or conferencing facilities such as Zoom or Skype which can help to move forward or resolve a current situation.

Court proceedings will undoubtedly be impacted by the current lockdown with no ‘normal’ family court hearings taking place, however urgent business will still be considered and dealt with by the Court. Help is out there. Cases will be prioritised with those concerning the safety or welfare of individuals at risk being dealt with urgently.

Specialists in family law, as well as experienced child law solicitors, our team understand that sometimes you can’t just ‘ride it out’ and wait for this pandemic to be over. Whether you need urgent action or advice on how to prepare for the months ahead, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
